How I Get a Silk Press at Home

I love my curly locks, but I’m not going to lie, it is very time consuming. My ‘wash routine’ can last up to five hours – this doesn’t even include styling time.  Since going natural, I stopped using any form of heat, not because I was against it but because I didn’t see the need for it – I’m sure my natural hair ladies can relate to this.

My first experience of a silk press was at Elite Hair Lounge. Before then, I never knew I could get my locks to look smooth and straight. When my hair reverted back, I began yearning for that silky smooth texture again. I knew nowhere local could give me the same look and another trip to Elite Hair Lounge would be near impossible – because they are always fully booked.

How to Get a Silk Press at Home

For those reading and thinking what is a silk press? Well, a silk press is simply the use of ceramic hair straighteners to smooth out curls – effectively leaving hair looking silky and straight. Unlike with a traditional press and curl, a silk press requires no grease.

What I loved about my experience of a silk press was that my hair became more manageable without the use of harsh chemicals. My hair felt incredibly soft with lots of movements – something I wasn’t very used to. After scouring the internet, I discovered that with the right products I would be able to achieve this look at home.

Thermasmooth is a range from Mizani designed as a 4-step system for thermal straightening hair. It includes a shampoo, conditioner, smoothing serum and an anti-humidity spritz which all work together to help smooth hair whilst protecting it from humidity and give long lasting frizz-free results.

Cloud Nine’s Wide Iron Straighteners is one of those products that you don’t realise you need until you have it. Before going natural, I was a using a cheap-ish basic hair straightener thinking it was doing the job. Oh how wrong I was.

These straighteners are designed specifically for long thick hair and work like a dream. It heats up really fast and allows you to adjust the heat accordingly!

Both the Thermasmooth shampoo and conditioner contain Mizani’s advanced C3 smoothing complex.  I loved how the shampoo left me hair feeling clean but not striped. The Smooth Guard along with the Shine Extend worked well in keeping the hair smooth and frizz- free. Using these products, I was able to get a silk press at home. I have to admit, it’s not as pin straight it would be if I’d gone to a salon, but it straight hair none the less. My at-home press lasts about 2 weeks or when I next wash my hair!
