Pre-wash Treatments That’ll Enhance Your Washday

We all know the importance of a good post-wash hair mask but should you actually be concentrating on your pre?

The idea of adding yet another step to our tedious hair care regime can sound completely unappealing, but is it a step that you’re neglecting that could take your hair from ‘meh’ to ‘heck yeah’. A post-wash hair mask is often the difference between simply clean hair and hydrated hair, the injection of moisture your hair needs after it’s been cleansed of oil (and dirt) build up, yet you could be missing a trick if you haven’t contemplated opting for a pre-wash treatment. Philip Kingsley was one of the industry pioneers of pre-shampoo treatments and their iconic Elasticizer is still one of their bestselling products since being created specifically for Audrey Hepburn and has been pioneering pre-wash conditioning ever since. Annabel Kingsley, trichologist & director of communications at Philip Kingsley explains “Hair is naturally elastic and should stretch up to 30% of its length when wet before breaking. However, this often isn’t the case – styling and daily wear and tear decrease the hair’s stretchability so that strands snap much more easily. Weekly use of a pre-wash conditioning mask helps to improve elasticity, making the hair stronger and more resilient.” It’s that extra hit of hydration that Afro hair will lap up due to it’s naturally drier texture, “Individuals with coarse and Afro hair will usually need to use conditioning masks more frequently than those with fine hair. Coarse hair types tend to be drier as each strand has a larger surface area and the hair is often more brittle as weak points form along the hair shaft where twists occur such as where the hair curls,” says Anabel.

The length of time you leave a pre-wash treatment on for ranges from product to product so if you have no time at all before washing you could consider an overnight pre-wash treatment such as Virgin Coconut Oil or if you’ve got 15 minutes (or more) extra you can pop on a mask such as the Joliette Hair Mud Mask. After leaving on the mask, treatment or oil wash your hair and condition as normal.
