Now that summer is finally here (well, at least of the time of writing this) we can now start to think about switching up our beauty routines and swap our heavier winter lotions and potions for lighter formulations. Just like we do with our hair, it’s essential to adapt your skincare routine to ensure that your skin doesn’t become blocked by product overload. Here are a few skin swap suggestions to implement into your routine:
Kiehls Ultral Facial Moisturizer (from £17.50) is a firm-favourite among beauty enthusiasts, and is famed for its light yet effective formula, that is kind to the skin and works with all skin types due to its fuss free ingredients which include Squalane, vitamin A and vitamin A. Even though it’s light in texture, it works with your skin to nourish and hydrate from below the surface, and at such a fantastic price too, this is a must for your summer beauty arsenal. For a more premium option try Bobbi Brown Hydrating Face Cream, £43, which is also gentle in formulation but really hydrates the skin without leaving a greasy residue. To keep those shiny T-zone patches at bay during balmy days opt for Bioderma Sebium Mat Control Shine-Control Moisturiser, £12.49
Although the UK is hardly known for its hot temperatures, it does have a tendency to get humid during the summer, and if you live in the city, pollution will definitely affect your skin as well. We recommend a gentle toner to remove impurities such as Skyn Micellar Cleansing Water, £18.50. This gentle cleansing water removes dirt, oil and makeup with one single swipe helping to unclog the pores without stripping the skin of its natural oils. Ingredients include natural sources such as Artic algae extract, leaf extract, witch hazel and Nordic Birch Sap.
To keep your skin, radiant and supple, apply a nightly serum such as Bobbi Brown Intensive Skin Supplement, £48. This lightly-fragranced beauty saviour infuses the skin natural ingredients such as White Birch Extract and white grape extract that smoothes the skin and leaves your complexion feel soft and supple to the touch. Apply a few drops at the end of the day and you’ll wake up feeling the energising effects of this product. Another great serum option is The Pure Collection Prickly Pear Serum (£26), a 100% organic serum sourced in very small patches throughout Morocco. This oil comes in a small 10ml gold cased bottle but is super-concentrated, and along with prickly pear seed oil is formulated with Vitamins E and K and leaves the smooth to the touch and reduces under eye patches and hyperpigmentation.
Although it may seem counter-intuitive to apply an oil to the skin during the warmer months, in actuality, they are great for removing makeup and impurities from the skin. When oil meets oil it collides with your sebum to help remove it from the surface of your skin. bareMinerals Total Cleansing Oil, £22 is one of the best on the market. With its delicate blend of bilberry, borage, cucumber and sunflower oils, it really works up a good lather to remove dirt and debris from your skin. If you are after more of a traditional cleanser try Kiehls Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash (£24), a creamy gel which foams on application and washes away dirt and oil, and is gentle enough to use on a daily basis.
During the more muggy temperatures, refreshing the skin with a light spritz such as Absolute Aromas Organic Lavender Floral Water (£6.25), which comes in handy small bottle with a spray applicator that can be stashed away in your handbag and used to cool and revitalise the skin when needed throughout the day.
