Liha Beauty is a gorgeously packaged and presented natural organic skin and haircare brand that blends the rich botanical life of West Africa with traditional English aromatherapy and folk remedies. With products that are 100% natural, vegan and cruelty-free, we caught up with the the two founders of the brand – Lina and Abi – who generously talked about their journey so far
What inspired you to create Liha Beauty?
We were always making our own things at home and friends eventually talked us into launching!
How did your journey begin? Did you always have a clear vision of what you wanted to do?
We always had a clear vision of where we wanted to go but it all happened a little quicker than we had expected!
Did you face any challenges when you began your own business? What lessons have you learned along your journey?
We have faced so many challenges and lessons it would take forever to explain! The most important thing is to stick with your dream and remember why you started.
How would you describe your typical customer?
We don’t really have a typical customer – we love to introduce new people to the powers of Shea butter through our workshops and they include everyone from new mothers to people that love to travel and love the multipurpose nature of our product.
Finance seems to be a bit of a sensitive topic when it comes to boutique black businesses. What advice would you give to a budding indie black beauty business owner on how to create a thriving brand with limited resources?
We had very limited resources when we started. You just have to work with what you have and get your product out there as much as possible.
Who would you consider your ultimate beauty entrepreneur inspiration famous or otherwise?
I have a lot of respect for Anita Roddick – what she did with the Body Shop was amazing by combining intelligence, politics, ecological issues and beauty. I worked in The Body Shop as my first Saturday job and she would come round to each store and talk to every employee. She definitely inspired us when we started our business.
What have been some of the most profound learning experiences throughout your entrepreneurial journey?
You never know what is around the corner, so you just have to be flexible to roll with the punches.
What does 2018 have in store for your brand?
We are currently raising capital so that we can expand and grow even more over the next few years!
