Confused as to why your hair is failing to flourish despite your efforts? Fear not! Here’s our list of five potential reasons you’ve yet to reach your goals.
1. You have a moisture/protein imbalance
Achieving the right moisture/protein balance can be tricky, but failing to do so could lead to either soggy or brittle hair, both of which can result in serious breakage. Yes ladies, there is such a thing as moisture overload, a problem that gets little attention in our moisture-obsessed hair world. So whilst keeping your hair hydrated is key to preserving a healthy mane, without the right amount of protein to offset this you may notice that your hair feels oversaturated and mushy when it’s wet or damp. Another thing to look out for is your hair’s elasticity. If you can stretch your stands without them recoiling back to their natural state, you’ve got a moisture problem on your hands (literally). Remedy this with regular protein treatments that are suitable for your hair type.
2. You’re too heavy-handed
Even though you don’t necessarily feel any pain when styling the truth is you may not realise your own strength. Maybe you’re always in a rush and don’t have the time or patience to dedicate to what you’re doing. Whatever the reason, we’re here to remind you that haircare is one area of your life where the softly, softly approach will reap benefits. It’s time to forgo your tugging and rough combing and start handling your hair with care.
3. You’re not wearing protective styles
Whether you love them or loathe them, wearing regular protective styles will almost always result in length retention. Keeping things low maintenance so that your hair has minimal contact with your hands and clothes, as well as being shielded from harsh weather, makes for the perfect combination. Thankfully you have a ton of options – braids, canerows, twists, buns and tuck and roll styles all pass the protective test. If you prefer your hair to frame your face, weaves and wigs will see you right.
4. You won’t stop heat styling
It may be time to accept that your beloved thermal styling electricals could be at the root of your hair problems. For those partial to frequent straightening, blowdrying and curling with heat, your goal of attaining a lustrous head of hair will probably remain out of reach until you start to exercise some restraint. Heat damage – which for those with natural hair could result in the permanent loosening of the curl pattern – split ends, dullness and dryness are all tell-tale signs of a heat addiction. If you can’t bear the thought of eliminating heat from your regimen completely, at least consider restricting your use. Trust us when we say your hair will thank you for it.
5. You’re not paying attention to your scalp
Considering that it’s what our hair grows from, it’s amazing how many people overlook their scalp. Yes, we all want a beautiful head of healthy hair, but if your scalp is suffering you’re missing a crucial component. Build up, either from products or your scalp’s natural oil which is called sebum, can result in clogged pores which stifles hair growth. Keep a quality clarifying shampoo in the bathroom cabinet that you can reach for whenever you feel it’s time for a deep cleanse. A diluted apple cider vinegar rinse is also great for this, as well as treating other problems like dandruff and itchiness.
