With 2019 in full swing, My Hair Bar co-owner, Lorraine Dublin offers style predictions for Afro hair for the year ahead.
SMOOTH LIKE BUTTA
“Natural free Afro hair will continue to be popular this year but clients will be opting to wear it in a smooth, sleek texture achieved by non-chemical-based systems like keratin treatments, silk pressing and Texture Release by Avlon, which contains amino acids” explains Lorraine. “A smoothing treatment provides the wearer with style versatility as well as manageability. We recommend clients come in the salon every 8-12 weeks to top up on their smoothing treatment, and also have regular trims and hydrating treatments in between this time.”
CRAZY FOR COLOUR!
“With so many women wearing their hair natural, we’ve seen an upswell in colour services” says Lorraine. “This has occurred because there’s less likelihood of causing damage if you only have one chemical treatment on your hair. The trend will continue in 2019, and the palette will consist bright and bold neons which of course includes Pantone’s 2019 colour of the year – Living Coral, as well more muted tones like baby pink, pearlescent blue and auburn. Hair can be pre-lightened prior to colour treatments to achieve real bold, head-turning colour, but we will also see a lot of more tints on natural hair.”
DO THE DOUBLE DUTCH
“Double cornrows will be the most popular way to wear braids this year” exclaims! “Offering style convenience for time-starved women, this cool contemporary look can last up to ten days and is easy to remove. Clients are advised to add synthetic extensions for length and volume; we also urge women to install braids professionally to avoid breakage around the hairline, or if you plan to do them yourself just ensure you don’t apply too much pressure.”
COILED TO PERFECTION
If there’s one style statement Lorraine can confidently guarantee for 2019, it’s the omnipresence of big hair. “Big hair will become even bigger this year as voluminous structured curls will be one of the most coveted looks in 2019”, she says. “Clients will be opting for rod sets on natural hair, which is achieved by washing and treating the hair before setting it with flexible rods and sitting clients under the dryer which, then creates soft defined hair that can be teased out for extra va va voom.”
