We’re passionate about children’s haircare, especially when it comes to little black girls and boys, who are often taught covertly or overtly that their hair just doesn’t measure up to society’s expectations of what a healthy mane looks like. Just think of the countless stories of young black girls being discriminated against because of their hairstyling choices both overseas and in the UK. It’s no wonder then that there is often uncertainty and a reluctance for young girls with kinky colily hair textures to embrace the texture of hair that stems from their scalp, and sadly that can often lead to unhealthy hair practices.
With this in mind Sal Wynter-Baxter, founder of Root2Tip and natural hair advocate has created Europe’s first ever Curl Camp – – a festival dedicated to inspire self-love and self confidence in children with Afro hair through hair education. The idea behind Curl camp stemmed from conversations Sal had with her young daughter and her friends. Such conversations revealed that little girls as young as 7 years old do not like the hair texture see in the mirror, and Sal decided that this needs to change.
Curl Camp will take place on September 29th at the YAA centre, W9 2AN between 12-6pm and is ideal for children who are aged 5-13 alongside their parents. With sessions like the ‘Detangling DEN’, ‘AFRO ART workshops’, my hair can grow! A kid’s hair catwalk and much more, this exciting event will take mini-festival goers on a journey set to educate and inspire them on all aspects of their natural hair.
