This month we visit central London salon that specialises in Afro hair care – My Hair Bar. The salon opened its doors in 2015 and in a short space of time has become a popular go-to spot for women who have their finger on the pulse on all the latest hair trends. The salon received the ultimate recognition in 2017 when it was voted one of the Top 10 Best Afro salons in the London by Time Out, so it should come as no surprise that My Hair Bar boasts a celeb clientele which includes Beverley Knight, Charlene White, the rapper EVE and Sarah Jane Crawford. With its funky, bohemian décor and cool, relaxed vibe, our salon tester Zoe Drysdale visited the salon for a total restyle, opting for a bright, head-turning red. Read on to see how she got on.
What was your hair like prior to treatment?
Before visiting the salon my hair had colour at the ends, it was in need of a trim. I have not applied much heat to my hair since adding colour, however, my hair felt dry where the dead ends were and I do tend to suffer with dry scalp.
What did you hope to achieve with your salon visit?
I wanted a change of colour with healthier hair. I wanted my hair straightened with flat irons but felt a bit apprehensive, as I have found in the past, either m hair is straightened too much and I lose the curl pattern in my hair, or it is not straightened well and by the time I get home it has practically reverted back to its original texture.
Describe the decor and atmosphere of My Hair Bar?
The quirkiness and elegance of the salon is what struck me straight away. The décor was so individualistic, I’ve never seen a salon presented in this way before. I instinctively knew that the creativity I was looking for in my hairstyle would be found here. The striking mirrors that were different at each work station, gave the salon a feeling of vastness, even though the space available is not limited. What stood out to me the most was the wonderful pictures placed throughout the salon featuring the work created by the stylists.
What treatment/style did you have?
My hair was lighted, then a red colour chosen by myself was added to the lightened hair and a brown was applied to the roots. Once the colour process was completed, my hair was blowdried and straightened using flat irons. My stylist, Lorraine Dublin, then trimmed my ends and straightened my hair again for the final time.
What products were used for your treatment?
From my recollection KeraCare products were used, Lorraine identified that my scalp was quite dry so used a scalp treatment that was really cooling and refreshing
What advice were you given about upkeep and aftercare?
Keep hair well moisturised, but use a light product, as the heavier oils do not agree with my hair texture. I was also given advice on different hairstyles I can do without using heat, for example, twist outs or setting hair with rods.
Were the results what you expected?
The results were astounding! I haven’t seen my hair looking this good in years. It had a healthy bounce to it and the colour was exactly what I had in mind when I decided to go for a red. The trim was really good as well; I tend to judge a good trim by how I am able to upkeep my hair after the visit. Straightening my hair myself after my visit has been was effortless, therefore the cut was done well.
